How to choose kraft paper tape
Start with how the tape goes on. Water-activated tape carries a dry adhesive that turns tacky when a dispenser wets it. As the adhesive dries, it works into the fibers of the corrugated box, so opening the carton tears the seal and leaves visible damage. Flatback tape is a paper tape with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It sticks when pressed on and needs no water.
Then pick the grade. Reinforced water-activated tape suits cartons that ship as single parcels. Non-reinforced gummed tape costs less per foot and suits lighter boxes and cartons that ship stacked on a pallet.
Width, length and thickness
Reinforced rolls come 70 mm, 72 mm and 3 in wide. A 70 mm roll is about 2.76 in and a 72 mm roll is about 2.83 in. The 72 mm x 450 ft roll is the most common size in the United States, and it ships 10 rolls to a case. Rolls of 600, 900 and 1,000 ft mean fewer roll changes at a busy packing station.
Where a listing gives a thickness, reinforced rolls run 5.8 to 7.5 mil. A mil is one thousandth of an inch. Rows marked Not listed are reinforced rolls sold without a listed thickness. The flatback rolls in the tables are 60 yd, or 180 ft, long and 3/4 in to 4 in wide. The 3M 2517 rolls are 6.5 mil and the 3M 2525 rolls are 9.5 mil.

Buying by the case and pallet
Every price in the tables is for a full case, and the price per roll is the case price divided by the rolls in it. Water-activated tape cases weigh 18 to 43 lb and flatback cases 3 to 22 lb.
Volume pricing applies at checkout: 3% off when the cart holds 3 or more items and 5% off at 6 or more. Each case counts as one item. Orders of one or two items with a product subtotal of $500 or more ship free when the checkout freight rate is $45 or less, or $90 or less on orders of $1,000 or more. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping. Checkout shows the freight for your address before you pay.

Questions about kraft paper tape
What is water-activated tape called?
It is also sold as gummed tape, gum tape, gummed paper tape and WAT. Kraft tape can mean water-activated tape or flatback paper tape, so check how the tape goes on before you order.
Do I need a dispenser for water-activated tape?
For regular packing, yes. A water-activated tape dispenser wets the adhesive and cuts each strip to length. The 19.5 in steel frame manual dispenser takes 1.5 in to 3 in tape, which covers every water-activated roll in the tables. The Marsh TD2100 electric dispenser cuts set lengths from 5 to 99 in.
What is the difference between reinforced and non-reinforced water-activated tape?
Reinforced tape has fiberglass yarns between two layers of kraft paper, which makes the closure more durable for parcel shipping. Non-reinforced tape is paper only and costs less per foot. It is common on lighter boxes and on cartons that ship together on a pallet.
Is kraft paper tape the same as masking tape?
No. Flatback kraft tape has a flat paper backing and is sold for sealing cartons. Most masking tape has a creped paper backing. For painting and masking jobs, see masking tape.
How strong is water-activated tape?
It depends on the grade. Reinforced rolls carry fiberglass yarns and hold up better in parcel shipping than paper-only tape. The printed 3 in x 450 ft rolls are listed for 40 to 60 lb cartons.
How many rolls come in a case?
In the tables, water-activated tape comes 6 to 20 rolls per case, depending on width and length, and flatback tape comes 6 to 36 rolls per case. Each row lists the exact count and the price per roll.
