How to choose poly tubing

Layflat width

Poly tubing is sized by layflat width, the width of the tube pressed flat on the roll. Opened up, the tube measures twice that width around. For a flat item, the layflat width has to cover the item's width plus its thickness. For a round item, divide its circumference by 2. A part 4 inches across is about 12.6 inches around, so it needs 6.3 inches of layflat width and fits a 7 inch roll. Leave a little slack so the item slides in without stretching the film.

Gauge

Gauge is the thickness of each wall in mils, and 1 mil is 0.001 inch. Heavier film stands up better to punctures and rough handling. Lighter film costs less per bag and packs tighter. The 2 mil clear listings name food, candy and treat bags as common uses. The 6 mil clear listings name heavy industrial parts.

Roll length and bags per roll

Thicker tubing comes on shorter rolls, so a clear roll of a given width weighs about the same in every gauge: about 15 lb at 4 inches wide and 36 lb at 10 inches. To count bags, multiply the roll length in feet by 12 and divide by the bag length in inches.

Clear, black, anti-static, polypropylene or VCI

Clear tubing shows what is inside. Black tubing is all-virgin low-density polyethylene and opaque, so it hides the contents and blocks light. Pink anti-static tubing is for electronics, circuit boards and other static-sensitive parts, and the pink color marks it as anti-static. The 2 mil polypropylene tubing comes on 1,000 foot rolls. The blue VCI tubing carries a vapor corrosion inhibitor for ferrous metal parts in storage and shipping.

Sealing and dispensing

Close both ends of each cut piece. Most packing lines use an impulse heat sealer, and tape or twist ties work for temporary closures. Impulse sealers with a cutter seal the tubing and trim off the excess film in one stroke. A 12 inch tubing dispenser for tabletop or wall mounting holds the roll while you pull and cut.

Buying by the roll and pallet

Every price is for one roll. Volume pricing comes off at checkout: 3% at 3 or more items in the cart and 5% at 6 or more, and rolls from different rows count together. Orders of one or two items with a product subtotal of $500 or more ship free when the checkout freight rate is $120 or less. Orders of three or more items get the volume discount instead of free shipping. Orders of one or two items get free ground shipping in the US at $99 or more when the checkout shipping charge is $29.95 or less. Rolls weigh from about 6 to 70 lb, and each row lists the roll weight for freight planning. Common questions

What is lay flat tubing?

It is a continuous tube of plastic film wound flat on a roll. The long edges are folds, so you only seal the ends. Layflat tubing and poly tubing are the same product.

How is layflat tubing measured?

By layflat width, gauge and roll length. Layflat width is the flat width of the tube on the roll, and the open tube measures twice that around, so a 10 inch roll opens to 20 inches around. Gauge is the thickness of one wall in mils.

What material is poly tubing?

Most rolls here are polyethylene. The black rolls list all-virgin low-density polyethylene. The page also carries 2 mil polypropylene tubing and 4 mil VCI polyethylene tubing for metal parts.

What is poly tubing used for?

Making each bag the length of the item inside. Packers use it for parts, hardware, odd-sized items, food and retail goods. One roll covers many bag lengths, so you stock fewer pre-cut sizes.

How many bags can I make from a roll?

Multiply the roll length in feet by 12 and divide by the bag length in inches. A 1,075 foot roll of 4 mil tubing cut at 18 inches makes about 716 bags before trim at the seals.

Is poly tubing food safe?

Most of the 2 mil polypropylene rolls and some clear polyethylene rolls list FDA food-contact compliance in their specs. Check the spec on the product page for the SKU you order.
