Overview
Stretch wrap and pallet wrap for hand wrapping
Choose stretch wrap by application method, film type, width, gauge, roll length and case count. For hand-wrapped pallets, the three examples below give you a specific starting point: 60 gauge hand stretch film in 2,000-foot rolls, packed four rolls per case. Compare those dimensions with your current film, then evaluate the wrap on a representative load before changing your packing process.
Stretch film is applied under tension around a load. The right choice depends on the load's shape, its edges, the wrapping method and the handling it will receive. Film gauge alone does not establish how much weight a finished pallet can safely carry or how well it will remain contained.
Compare hand stretch wrap by roll and case
| Product and SKU | Film type | Width and roll length | Gauge | Case count |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15-inch hand stretch film — SF156 | Blown | 15 in x 2,000 ft | 60 | 4 rolls |
| 15-inch cast hand stretch film — SF156CAST | Cast | 15 in x 2,000 ft | 60 | 4 rolls |
| 18-inch cast hand stretch film — SF186CAST | Cast | 18 in x 2,000 ft | 60 | 4 rolls |
Each listed case contains 8,000 nominal linear feet of film. The 18-inch film is wider than the 15-inch options, so equal roll footage does not mean equal film area. These examples are hand film; use the individual listing to check other formats in the collection.
Match pallet wrap to your operation
| Your packing situation | Compare first | Verify on the actual load |
|---|---|---|
| Hand wrapping with an established packing method | Current width, gauge, film type and roll length | Dispenser fit, overlap, tension and operator handling |
| Choosing between cast and blown film | Films of the required dimensions and application format | Unwind behavior, visibility, cling and response around load edges |
| Using an automatic or semi-automatic wrapper | Machine-grade film and the wrapper's roll requirements | Core, roll size and equipment settings; do not assume hand rolls are compatible |
| Adding protection over the pallet top | A separately sized top sheet or cover | Coverage and fit using the pallet covers size guide |
Compare film use and cost per pallet
Start with a consistent wrapping method and record how much film it uses on a representative pallet. Keep load dimensions, overlap and wrapping passes consistent when comparing products. A longer roll does not establish a fixed number of pallets: application technique and load geometry change consumption.
For the examples above, divide the case price by four to compare product cost per roll. Include quoted shipping when comparing delivered costs. For different widths or gauges, look beyond the roll price and measure the film used per successfully wrapped pallet. The stretch film per pallet guide can help structure that estimate.
For a recurring requirement or multi-case order, request a bulk quote with the SKU, cases required, delivery ZIP and expected reorder frequency. Use the bulk stretch film and pallet wrap guide to organize the buying requirements, or compare specifications in the Uline stretch wrap alternatives guide.
Stretch wrap questions
Are stretch wrap, stretch film and pallet wrap the same thing?
These terms commonly describe film stretched around goods for containment. Check the product's application method and specifications rather than relying on the name alone. You can also browse the stretch film collection.
Is 60 gauge film right for my pallet?
Gauge describes thickness, but it does not establish load suitability on its own. Compare your load shape, edges, wrapping method and handling requirements, then check containment with a representative packing trial.
Is stretch wrap the same as shrink film?
No. Stretch wrap is applied under tension; shrink film is intended for a heat-shrinking process. Confirm the required packing method before ordering from the shrink film collection.
For a broader packing setup, browse stretch film and strapping and poly strapping. Choose each component around the complete load-securing method.
Stretch-wrap gauge and shrink-wrap terminology
For conventional plastic-film gauge, 100 gauge equals 1 mil, or 0.001 inch; 80 gauge is nominally 0.8 mil. A designation such as gauge EQ or performance-equivalent is not a measurement of actual thickness. Confirm the physical specification when your process requires it.
Stretch wrap is applied under stretch. Shrink film uses a heat-shrinking process. A shared color, width or gauge does not make those materials interchangeable. Match the wrapping equipment and approved application method first.
| SKU | Width × nominal length | Listed format | Rolls per case |
|---|---|---|---|
| SF188 | 18 in × 1,500 ft | Hand film; 80 gauge | 4 |
| SF188CAST | 18 in × 1,500 ft | Cast hand film; 80 gauge | 4 |
A requirement for six suitable rolls needs two four-roll cases, supplying eight rolls. A case supplies 6,000 nominal linear feet, before stretch, trimming and waste. It does not establish how many pallets the film will secure. Measure representative consumption and evaluate containment for the actual load.
