Bin Box Size Chart: Corrugated Bin Boxes, Shelf Bins and Stack Bins by Shelf Depth

Bin boxes are sized to the shelf: pick the depth that matches the shelving (12 in is the standard), then width and height by the parts. The chart lists every stocked corrugated bin box, plastic shelf bin and stack bin by size with the shelf depth it fits, its volume, case count and cost each, plus how to lay out a shelf.
Sizing a bin to a shelf
Bin boxes are sized to shelving. Depth comes first, because a bin that overhangs the shelf tips when it is pulled; width and height then set how many bins fit across a shelf and how much each holds. Corrugated bin boxes are open-front kraft or white boxes for parts, hardware and bagged goods, sold flat in bundles; plastic shelf bins are molded open-front bins with a hopper front; stack and hang bins have a lip that hooks on a louvered panel or stacks on the bin below.

Corrugated vs plastic
- Corrugated bin boxes cost a fraction of plastic, ship flat, take a label or marker directly and are recycled when the SKU changes. They hold 30 to 50 lb and last years indoors; they do not tolerate oil, water or forklift contact.
- Plastic shelf bins cost several times more, are washable and hold their shape under heavy or oily parts. They come with label holders and dividers.
- Stack and hang bins are for workstations and louvered panels where the bin is lifted and moved, not for fixed shelving.
Setting up a shelf
- Measure the shelf depth and clear width between uprights, and the clear height between shelves.
- Choose depth equal to the shelf depth or 1/2 to 1 in less.
- Divide the width. A 36 in shelf takes nine 4 in bins, six 6 in bins or three 12 in bins; mix widths by part size.
- Leave hand room. Height should be about 2 in under the clear shelf height so hands reach the back of the bin.
- Label the front with a 3 x 1 or 4 x 1 label from the label size chart, or a #4 tag from the tag size chart on wire for bins that move.
