How to choose foam mounting tape

Pick a thickness

Foam tape is a foam carrier with adhesive on both sides, and the foam is what lets it fill gaps between rough or uneven surfaces. The rolls here run from 1/32 inch, for flat, smooth parts that sit close together, to 1/4 inch, for uneven surfaces and wider gaps.

Permanent or removable

Standard foam mounting tape is made to hold permanently, and 3M says removing its mounting tapes may damage the surface. For signs, displays and anything that comes down later, use the removable 1/32 and 1/16 inch PE foam grades, and test them on painted walls first. For structural bonds on metal, glass and plastic, the 3M VHB tape page lists every grade.

Apply it right

Surfaces must be clean and dry: 3M's data for its 4004 foam tape calls for an isopropyl alcohol and water wipe, firm pressure, and application between 70 and 100°F, never below 50°F. The bond keeps building after it goes on, and 3M notes the 4004 bond grows substantially stronger with age.

What is foam tape used for?

Mounting and bonding parts without screws, such as signs, nameplates, trim and displays. The foam fills gaps between rough or uneven surfaces that thin tape cannot bridge.

Is foam mounting tape permanent?

Standard grades are made to hold permanently, and 3M says removing its mounting tapes may damage surfaces. Removable PE foam grades are made to come off later; test them first.
