How to choose 3M VHB tape
What VHB tape is
VHB, short for Very High Bond, is 3M's double-sided acrylic foam tape. 3M introduced it in 1980 to bond metal, glass and plastic in place of screws, rivets and welds, and it is built to hold permanently.
Pick a thickness and color
The grades here run from 2 to 120 mil. Thinner grades suit flat, smooth parts that sit close together, and thicker foam fills gaps and evens out uneven or textured surfaces. Clear grades disappear behind glass and clear plastic; white, gray and black match the parts around them. Each listing gives the grade's thickness and color.
How to apply VHB tape
3M's application steps: clean both surfaces with a 70/30 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water, apply between 70 and 100°F, and press firmly, about 15 psi with a roller. The bond reaches about half its strength in 20 minutes, 90 percent in 24 hours and full strength in 72 hours, so load it after it has had time to build.
