How to choose floor marking tape
Width
Use 1/4 in to 1 in tape to color code shelf edges, bins and racks. Use 2 in to 4 in tape on the floor for aisle lines, walkways, staging spots and work cells.
Thickness
Thickness is measured in mil, one thousandth of an inch. The 36 yd vinyl tapes run 5 to 7 mil and the barricade tape is 3 mil. The PVC floor tape is 60 mil, ten times the 6 mil vinyl. Its beveled edges keep forklifts and other equipment from snagging and tearing it, and it removes cleanly without adhesive residue. Length and quantity
Add up the length of every line, then divide by the roll length. The 6 mil, 7 mil and 3M vinyl rolls are 36 yd, or 108 ft. The PVC rolls are 100 ft. Two lines down a 100 ft aisle take 200 ft, which is two rolls of either. For long runs there is a floor tape applicator made for 2 to 4 in vinyl tape.

What the colors mean
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.144 sets two safety colors. Red is the basic color for fire protection equipment, danger and emergency stop controls. Yellow is the basic color for caution and for marking physical hazards such as striking against, stumbling, falling, tripping and caught in between.
That standard does not assign white, blue, green, orange, purple or black. Set a color key for your site and post it where crews can see it. Where forklifts or other mechanical handling equipment are used, OSHA 1910.176(a) requires permanent aisles and passageways to be appropriately marked. It does not set a color, width or marking method.

- PVC floor tape ships one roll per case, and the corner angles ship 24 per case.

Common questions
What is floor marking tape used for?
It marks aisles, walkways, work cells, staging spots and hazard areas on warehouse and plant floors, and color codes shelves, bins and racks.
What color should hazard tape be?
Yellow, or yellow and black stripes, for physical hazards such as tripping. OSHA 1910.144 makes yellow the caution color and red the color for danger.
What is the difference between caution tape and danger tape?
OSHA's sign standard, 1910.145, uses caution for a possible hazard and danger for an immediate one. Use the same split for tape: yellow caution tape to warn people, red danger tape where the hazard is immediate. The barricade tape here comes in yellow and black, and in red and black with a danger print.
What is barricade tape for?
Barricade tape is strung between posts or stands to close off an area, such as a spill, a dock door or a work zone. Floor marking tape sticks to the floor and marks lines and zones that stay in place.
How much floor tape is in a case?
A case of 2 in vinyl holds 24 rolls of 36 yd, or 2,592 ft of line. A 1 in case holds 48 rolls, or 5,184 ft. A PVC case is one 100 ft roll, and a case of barricade tape holds 4 rolls of 1,000 ft.
Can I buy less than a full case?
Yes. Many 6 mil, 7 mil and 3M 471 sizes come in 3-roll packs, listed in the tables and the grid. PVC floor tape is sold one roll at a time.
