How to choose double-sided tape

Start with the carrier, the layer between the two adhesive faces: foam, film or crepe paper. Adhesive transfer tape has none.

Foam tape: PE or polyurethane

PE foam tape comes in white and black, including 3M 4462 and 4466. The polyurethane tapes are 3M 4004, 4008, 4016 and 4032, from 1/4 down to 1/32 in thick.

3M VHB tape

VHB stands for very high bond. The foam and clear grades in the table are 15 to 120 mil thick, on 5 yd rolls 1/2 to 1 in wide. F9460PC, F9469PC and F9473PC are VHB transfer tapes at 2, 5 and 10 mil. 3M 4926 is also listed in 1 in x 72 yd, sold by the case.

Film and crepe paper tape

Film tapes here include 3.5 mil vinyl, 9 mil polyethylene, 3.5 mil PVC, 6 mil polypropylene and 2 mil polyester. Crepe paper tape is 7 mil, or 6 mil for 3M 410M.

Adhesive transfer tape

The ATG table lists 1/4 to 3/4 in rolls on a 1 in core, for ATG guns. The 60 yd and longer rolls, up to 12 in wide, come as hand rolls or on 3 in cores. 3M 950 and 969 are listed as high tack.

Common questions

What is the difference between transfer tape and double-sided tape?

Adhesive transfer tape is double-sided tape with no carrier, just a film of adhesive on a release liner. Peel the liner and only the adhesive stays on the part, 1 to 10 mil on this page. Foam, film and paper tapes have a carrier between two adhesive faces.

Is foam tape the same as double-sided tape?

Double-sided foam tape is one kind of double-sided tape, with adhesive on both faces of the foam. All the foam tape on this page is double-sided, including the 3M VHB foam grades.

What double-sided tape holds the most weight?

Holding power depends on the surfaces, the bond area and the direction of the load. On this page, 3M VHB is the high-bond line. Check the grade's 3M data sheet against your load.

How many rolls come in a case?

It depends on width and type: 144 rolls of 1/4 in 3M 465 transfer tape, 96 of 1/2 in vinyl film tape and 6 of 2 in PE foam tape. The VHB rolls in the table sell one at a time.

What dispenser do I need for adhesive transfer tape?

An ATG gun for the 1 in core rolls in the ATG table. The 3M 700 holds rolls up to 3/4 in x 60 yd and the 3M 752 up to 3/4 in x 36 yd. Both need an adapter for 1/4 in rolls, such as the 1/4 in adapter for the 3M 700.

Which double-sided tapes are removable?

PE foam tape comes in removable 1/2 and 1 in widths, and the foam squares in removable versions. 3M 9415PC and 9425 film tapes have a permanent face and a removable back. 3M 9579, 3M 665, the 9 mil PE film and 3M 928 transfer tape are listed as repositionable.
